Stuff You Should Read

Recommended Posts

I'm sure we all come across interesting articles and blogs about all kinds of things. But sometimes it's not an Android or programming thing and there's nowhere to post it. I often share things with Danks and my brother but here's a thread that I'm going to post them in.

Feel free to contribute. Any site, any topic. Interesting or otherwise entertaining text-based articles, or primarily spoken-word videos (e.g. TED talks). Cool science, funny anecdotes, life experiences, interesting interviews, and anything else along those lines.

And discussion about anything posted here, of course :) .

I'll start with some stuff that I have bookmarked.

These are mostly related to programming and jobs:

Salary Negotiation: Make More Money, Be More Valued
http://www.kalzumeus.com/2012/01/23/salary-negotiation/
I posted this in the Work thread before, everyone should read it. Targeted at software engineers but applies to most private-sector industries.

Coconut Headphones - Why Agile Has Failed
http://mikehadlow.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/coconut-headphones-why-agile-has-failed.html
A blog post looking at how and why agile software development has turned into a giant mess of terrible, and what we can do to fix it. The other links in the article are also good reads if you find this one interesting.

A Brief, Incomplete, and Mostly Wrong History of Programming Languages
http://james-iry.blogspot.jp/2009/05/brief-incomplete-and-mostly-wrong.html
A good quick read that is not to be taken too seriously.

The Myth of the Genius Programmer

A discussion about why being bad at programming is normal, why programmers hate to admit that they are wrong, and how to deal with these things and be a better developer. Much of this can be equally applied to other technical industries as well.

And some other assorted stuff:

The footballer trapped in 'The House of the Beautiful Sleeping Athlete'
http://www.theguardian.com/football/2014/feb/27/jean-pierre-adams-footballer-coma
True story of a footballer who has been in a coma for 30 years.

The Gravity of Coup
http://taogaming.wordpress.com/2013/02/10/the-gravity-of-coup/
A (frankly ridiculously) in-depth analysis of the card game Coup. Won't make much sense unless you've played the game, but somewhat interesting if you have.

Lessons from the World's Most Tech-Savvy Government
http://www.theatlantic.com/international/print/2014/01/lessons-from-the-worlds-most-tech-savvy-government/283341/
The title describes this one pretty well. What you probably won't expect is the country that it's written about.

The Body in Room 348
http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/2013/05/true-crime-elegante-hotel-texas-murder
A true-life murder mystery. The writing is a bit over the top but it's an interesting story.

In which I fix my girlfriend's grandparents' Wi-Fi and am hailed as a conquering hero
http://www.mcsweeneys.net/articles/in-which-i-fix-my-girlfriends-grandparents-wifi-and-am-hailed-as-a-conquering-hero
This one is just a funny story about a guy trying to fix an internet connection which happens to be really well written.

It's a video but it's a talky video:

An interview with (Android Design Lead and former WebOS Design Lead) Matias Duarte.  He talks a bit about Android and Android Wear, but mostly just design in general and the directions that mobile design might be heading in.
