Agree with Myrrh. I use WhatsApp & iMessage because that's what everyone I communicate with uses. Occasionally people also communicate with me on hangout or messenger, which is why I installed the apps. But other than that, it's basically all the other 2. It's the same conversation we used to have about ICQ/AIM/Yahoo/MSN.

I had three of those things installed for that exact reason during my school years, different people using different things. That and I'm pretty sure I spent most of my life on the internet when not sleeping, at school, or playing games. :x

One of my friends suggested using Trillion but I'd rather keep things separate.

Facebook does all those things for me by default, my google stuff doesn't which is odd. Meh, I get that its kind of environmental which people use. I think my Nanna used it because it happened to be on a phone which my Uncle gave her once, and she doesn't want to learn a new interface (which is kinda understandable considering she is bad at... well, everything except gambling), which means my Mum uses it for that.

Actually, even though I only use I for like two or three people, it would be useful if there was something similar to the desktop bubble thing with Hangouts, but for Facebook Messenger, does anyone have any good Chrome extensions for it they could recommend, would maybe catch more of those messages if I could have something sitting on my desktop in the same way.

Also their push notifications always seem to break for me their app is terrible sometimes and Todd suggested using the inbuilt Facebook website ones, which it should be able to do in theory but never seemed to work properly (as in, would push general notifications to my phone okay, but not messenger ones), I don't think we could figure out why not but I don't think I was the only person that seemed to be broken for.

On that note, it annoys me that if I use the Facebook App, that will include menu notifications for Messenger that will then request for me to open the app, well, why not just keep everything to the app then? Don't show me those in another app. Seriously, don't get me started on all the ways in which Facebook just fails for me.

You can turn off it forcing you to the app... I can't remember how I did it before but I've done it.

I do have Facebook Messenger installed and will answer it. I use five different apps with different people. If I have a choice I use Hangouts > Allo > WhatsApp > SMS > Facebook but honestly I don't care too much. And even though it's a nice app absolutely nobody uses Allo because Google are idiots and why does that even exist as a different thing to Hangouts? So realistically it's the other four.

Do people have any recommendations on any front around this stuff? I'm at a point where I haven't done this because I don't have confidence I'll make a good choice, so opinions and reviews are welcome to help me get to a point where I actually get something.

I don't understand what the question is. As we spent the last page establishing, buy a Pixel or a Moto G4 (Play). Ar you looking for advice on data plans? Three or Giffgaff are generally the best value.

I'm pretty sure you can't do this any more.

One option is to just use Franz for everything but given your dislike of Trillian that probably isn't what you're looking for.

That's called unbundling. Actually it does make sense for when you have separate use cases and user experiences but occasionally combine the two. I actually quite like it. Apps like Foursquare are the ones that really didn't do it right for me, as I believe they separated 1 use cases into 2 apps.

What annoys me is that the Facebook website forces you to install the Messenger app on mobile. You should make me to want install your app because it adds something to the experience, not because you refuse to let me to see the messages in a website that can do it just fine.

I get unbundling, I removed Facebook Messenger because I didn't want it, my use case called for the main app only.

But if they are unbundling, when I made a conscious choice to remove the messenger part it would be great to then not get notifications about messages. Especially when those notifications contain the first few words of the message (showing the app can access that) and can't be turned off permanently (the option to do so instead suppresses them for 24 hours).

Net result, I removed both Facebook apps from my phone and tablet instead of just the one I wanted gone.

I figure this is maybe a better thread for ongoing chat about Google Home, will tag @Dan as it's further to some points he was raising.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/04/10/google-home-app-says-multiple-users-now-supported/

This isn't working yet but looks like it will be very soon. This is a critical feature because it unlocks the ability to do account-related thing, e.g. set a reminder which will then trigger on your phone.

So, I still haven't got around to buying a new phone (because I suck), but definitely need one. Happy to spend more than my original budget. I guess ~£250 but if the correct price/performance balance is higher I don't have a strict limit. Not looking to buy the newest bestest thing ever as that's just not me.

It would need an SD card slot and a Good camera and anything else logical to ensure it probably lasts at least a couple of years. I don't play games on it.

Any recommendations/advice would be greatly appreciated!

If you don't want to spend £600 on a Pixel then just buy a Moto G5. In comparison to those two, every other phone is poor value, outright terrible, or some combination thereof.

I would not say that the G5 has a "good camera" but I suspect your definition of "good camera" is "takes reasonable photos in daylight" in which case it's absolutely fine. I also have no idea why anyone would need an SD card slot in 2017 but it has one anyway so there you go.

Get the Amazon-exclusive model with 3GB RAM as it's worth the extra £15:

Oh and since this recently caught my brother out when he upgraded his dinosaur phone: remember that all new phones use nano-SIM now.

Is the OnePlus 3T not any good as a midrange device?

Rumours are that the new OnePlus 5 is coming in the next couple of months and as I want a decent phone without spending £600-750 I was going to wait for that.

Their customer support is terrible and their warranty process is extremely slow and is known to result in people receiving totaly broken/trashed refurbished devices.

Their software is bad and untested and they have twice pushed out OTAs that broke fundamental device functionality (phone calls, mobile data) within the last year.

They are scummy as hell and think that having a competition where forum posters vote for the most attractive women to win a chance to buy their phone is an appropriate piece of marketing.

It's owned by a Chinese company (Oppo) that pretends to not own it. Why? Who knows.

And ultimately, what does it really give you over a G5? The problem now is that midrange devices hardly have a purpose. Can you really tell the difference between a Snapdragon 430 and a Snapdragons 635 or whatever? If you can then get a Pixel because you'll probably actually appreciate the unmatched touch responsiveness and software that was properly tuned for the hardware. But for most people the benefits are just far too small for the price difference so you may as well just buy a £175 phone as a £300 one.

But in the specific case of OnePlus the answer is that they are simply a horrible company.

Well I certainly wasn't expecting such a slating of OnePlus heh. I certainly hadn't read/heard of those issues so that's good to know. From what I can read it looks like most of those complaints are from a year or two ago, or at least reddit seems to think so:

That being said, I'd definitely have to think again about getting one of their devices, especially getting one that has been newly released.

I just find it a bit difficult to believe that the choice is between a £600 phone or a £170 one. That being said I should actually probably try going in to a store and try some of them to see whether I like the interface, the responsiveness etc.

Its not. You could also get the Moto G4 Play at £130. While worse than the G5 (I assume) its still a reasonable device if you're going on the "small, cheap, replace often" plan.

At this point it'd be pretty stupid to do yourself out of a year of updates in the interest of saving £40 or whatever by buying a G4 Play.

As for OnePlus, the very thread that you linked is full of people reporting the same kinds of issues that I mentioned. It's not that they've suddenly fixed everything in the last year, it's that they only ever care about their most recent phone and everything else just gets abandoned. But even with the 3T they managed to release an update that broken mobile data for a bunch of people so it's not like new devices are immune.

OnePlus is a company for people who look at spec sheets and get excited without really understanding if any of that really matters. "But look at the RAMs!" they declare. It's not that it's a bad phone, it's just that everything else about the company is terrible and it just doesn't really offer enough extra to make it good value compared to a G5.

Nice materials but annoying to see yet another proprietary connector for addons that all previous attempts suggest nobody wants anyway.

It's a nerd phone, it'll hardly sell any but they're most likely hardly make any so it'll still sell out. OS and security update record is obviously unknown at this point but I have some hope that Rubin would care about getting that right.

The main problem is it's £600 which is Pixel/iPhone pricing and if it doesn't have the responsiveness of those devices then what is the point? If it does, and the update speed is decent, then the second gen may be more compelling. Right now I'd say it's a risky purchase. But I'll be watching it with interest.

Yeah, I saw a slightly different and not as detailed article on this yesterday, my first thought after reading that one was that the naming felt a little weird. I blame Waitrose but "Essential" feels like the name of a budget range phone... but it's clearly trying to compete with high-end devices.

Will be interesting to keep an eye on where it goes, I was completely unaware of this device until yesterday afternoon. O_o
