Maz Report post Posted October 14, 2016 I'd get a bell if it doesn't have one already. It never ceases to amaze me how dumb pedestrians are sometimes. I was just doing road riding but I was grateful for the mud guards that I bought, they are not expensive and you get quite a few puddles in cycle lanes and on pavements depending on how bad the surface is. I also bought the Hump waterproof backpack cover to increase my visibility, and a reflective strap to go around my middle. You may also be grateful for some gloves but maybe your hands are tougher than mine!
Nacey Report post Posted October 14, 2016 But a bell weighs like 30g, think how much slower I'll go! *Buys carbon fibre bell*
Fyria Report post Posted October 14, 2016 You go even slower if you get stuck behind pedestrians though! So it depends on your route. I don't think I've ever used it to signal anything to cars yet.
Dan Report post Posted October 14, 2016 I wouldn't have thought cars can hear the bell...
Largi Report post Posted October 14, 2016 Don't need to ride on the road much. My route is come out of house, Go across public terrace of local college, down the abandon road due to it going nowhere (They've closed off the area around as they're building a new housing development off to the one side). Then Cycle path through a park, out of the park onto the cyclepath through the industrial estate and i'm at work. 25ish mins walk so 10 mins on a bike? Benefits page isn't working atm so can't see what I can get but once its up i'll take a look. From this. Bike Helmet Light (for Night Ride) Hi-Vis Mudguard Pumps (Hand & Floor) Insurance Multitool & Levers Bell
Fyria Report post Posted October 14, 2016 I still need to pick up a couple of things on that list still for my bike, mudguards and a floor pump are still on the waiting list. So are a whole bunch of things more specific to what I'm actually doing though. Will get there eventually!
Nacey Report post Posted October 14, 2016 Just to clarify, you don't need mudguards for road/path riding, you will get a bit of spray if it's raining but if you're getting changed anyway that doesn't matter. I certainly don't run them on my road bike. Gloves is a really good shout though, just basic fingerless ones with a bit of padding are highly recommended. You may want something thicker (or use the same ones with a love liner) for the winter but that's all down to personal preference. Goggles/shades can also be useful for the winter but certainly not a requirement. Wiggle is a really good site to get cycling gear. Dhb is their own-brand stuff and it's all good quality, most of my gear is theirs.
Fyria Report post Posted October 14, 2016 Yeah, gear things are another thing I'm still looking to pick up, especially going into winter, loads of stuff on my to-get wiggle save up list already, meep! Mudguards were recommended to me during the first ride it the term, notably because Glasgow though, you'll have to judge your own terrain to know whether it not they're worthwhile getting. Lagrosh Report post Posted October 14, 2016 It depends a lot on when you ride too. I ride just daily between home and work/supermarket/whatever. I strongly advise mudguards if you're not intending on switching clothes. It's surprising how quickly you'll pick up shite on the legs otherwise. Also yes to gloves. Bikes are cold at the best of times, but unless it's summer it'll be cold when riding.
Nacey Report post Posted October 14, 2016 Yeah, definitely. The reason I don't use mudguards is because I'm wearing cycling clothes and afterwards I'm taking a shower. I don't care about rain/mud/etc. If you're not getting changed they are basically mandatory. A lot of city bikes come with mudguards fitted anyway, especially the more "retro" style ones. Lagrosh Report post Posted October 14, 2016 Indeed. And usually LEDs using dynamos these days too (here at least).

Largi Report post Posted November 25, 2016 As well as back friday, work got a bunch of damaged stuff out of the warehouse and anything that was just cosmetic or box damage, chucked it on a pile and said "50% off". So I picked up a Steam Controller for £17 today. I'll let you know how it plays
Myrrh Report post Posted November 25, 2016 This is probably not the right thread for this, but In light of the Investigatory Powers Act 2016, NordVPN are offering a Black Friday/Cyber Monday sale. $3 a month for 2 years if you pay upfront.
Nacey Report post Posted November 25, 2016 One might argue that a VPN is now a thing that you need but absolutely do not want .

Nacey Report post Posted January 3, 2017 Amazed to hear that rocks are heavy. Can you also confirm whether water is wet?
Dan Report post Posted January 3, 2017 70g over 7 dice, where each fits within a 1" cube is still heavy for dice. Stone dice I have handled in the past I would not say were that heavy.
